In 1909, Canon City was the Fremont County seat and a town of orchards, irrigated fields, and the Arkansas River valley's fruit trade. Growers in the surrounding farms shipped apples, peaches, and other produce by rail, and the town's merchants depended on those harvests as much as on the state penitentiary, which by then was run as a state institution and still shaped local payrolls. Residents of the period also knew Canon City as a place where many people came for their health, drawn by the dry, sunny climate that Colorado promoted to invalids from the East. The decade brought steady civic improvements, with new brick commercial blocks and expanded schools reflecting a population that had grown well beyond the frontier mining days.
