Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1914 was a Catholic university run by the Congregation of Holy Cross, founded by Father Edward Sorin in 1842 on the St. Joseph River outside South Bend. The main building's golden dome, rebuilt after the fire of 1879, was the campus landmark that alumni and neighbors knew best. South Bend's factories, including the Studebaker wagon and automobile works and the Oliver Chilled Plow Works, drew workers and shaped the city that supplied the campus. Football was gaining a following that year; the 1913 victory over Army, with its forward passing, had already brought the school national attention.
