In 1918, Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, was a campus shaped by the First World War. That fall the federal government set up the Students' Army Training Corps on college campuses, and Purdue's male students were enrolled in military drill and training while the classrooms and dormitories were turned to war use. The influenza epidemic reached Indiana that autumn as well, closing schools and public gatherings across the state for a time. The armistice came on November 11, 1918, and the university began shifting back toward peacetime instruction, with its agricultural and engineering graduates still in demand on Indiana farms and in its war-stretched factories.
