This 1913 view shows the Senior-Junior Parade at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, where students marched in a spring tradition that tied class pride to the school's identity. Purdue had been founded in 1869 as Indiana's land-grant college, with a mission built around agriculture and the mechanical arts, and by the early 1910s its engineering programs drew students from across the state. West Lafayette sat across the Wabash River from the older city of Lafayette, which depended on railroads, grain, and manufacturing, so the campus and the town grew together. Students in 1913 would have known the university chiefly for its engineering reputation and its rivalries, and the parade offered a yearly chance for the classes to show themselves in public.
