Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, was a land-grant school that had opened its doors in 1874 on the strength of the Morrill Act, and by 1910 it was closely tied to the farms, factories, and railroads of the state. Lafayette sat across the Wabash River from West Lafayette, and the two towns depended on agriculture, manufacturing, and the rail lines that carried grain and livestock out of the region. Engineering and agriculture were the university's strongest fields, which gave students training that Indiana's growing industries wanted. Students in 1910 lived a campus life of military drill, literary societies, athletics, and football rivalries, and many of them would have considered the school the center of their world. This panorama records that campus as it looked to the people who studied and worked there.
