Indiana University in Bloomington in 1910 was led by President William Lowe Bryan, who had held the post since 1902 and was working to broaden the school's offerings beyond the classroom. The university had admitted women since the 1860s, and coeducation was a settled part of campus life that set it apart from many older Midwestern colleges. The Monon Railroad ran through Bloomington, linking the town to Indianapolis and Chicago and carrying students, faculty and visitors to the foot of the hill. Across the state, public schools and better roads were common topics of debate, and many graduates were expected to become teachers, lawyers or county officials in the towns where they had grown up.
