In 1913, Indiana University sat on its hillside in Bloomington with only a handful of substantial buildings. Samuel Ralston had just taken office as governor that January, and the state was still deciding how its public university would be funded. Bloomington's economy leaned on the limestone belt of Monroe County, where quarries supplied stone for buildings in distant cities. The Ohio River flood of March 1913 had devastated towns to the south, and Hoosiers followed the news of relief and rebuilding. Students on the hill were preparing for careers in law, medicine, teaching and the growing number of state jobs.
