Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1913 was a land-grant school that had grown up alongside the state's farms and factories, with its engineering and agriculture programs drawing students from across Indiana. The campus sat on the Wabash River bluffs across from Lafayette, and the twin cities were tied together by streetcar lines and the river trade that had shaped the region since the 1800s. Purdue's enrollment was climbing toward the couple thousand range in those years, and many students were the first in their families to attend college. Campus life centered on drill, athletics, and student organizations, and the university's ties to railroad and manufacturing interests in northwest Indiana gave the school a practical reputation. This panorama captures the campus as its neighbors and graduates would have recognized it before the First World War reshaped American higher education.
