In 1913 Purdue University sat on the west bank of the Wabash River at West Lafayette, Indiana, directly across from the manufacturing and railroad city of Lafayette. The land-grant school had been founded in 1869 with money from Lafayette merchant John Purdue, and by this time its engineering and agricultural programs were drawing students from across the state. The campus was closely tied to the local economy, since many Lafayette families earned their living from the railroads, foundries, and farm trade that the university's graduates served. That spring, the Wabash and other Indiana rivers rose sharply in flooding that damaged towns across the region, a reminder of how closely river life shaped both the city and the campus.
