Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, in 1904 was a land-grant school that had opened in 1874 on the bluffs above the Wabash River, funded in part by the federal Morrill Act of 1862 and by Lafayette businessman John Purdue's gift of land. The campus was small and still growing, with the engineering and agricultural programs that gave it a practical reputation among Indiana farm families and the railroad and manufacturing firms of the Midwest. Lafayette, across the river, was an industrial town of mills and rail yards, and students moved between the two shores by streetcar and footbridge. This photograph records a campus whose buildings were still new, and whose graduates were beginning to staff the state's farms, factories and surveying crews.
