Notre Dame, Indiana, in 1914 was a Catholic university of a few thousand students, run by the Congregation of Holy Cross on land along the St. Joseph River near South Bend. The school had built its reputation on engineering, law, and a football program that was only beginning to draw national attention; the team's coach, Jesse Harper, was in his first seasons when this view was taken. South Bend around it was an industrial city dominated by the Studebaker wagon and automobile works, which gave the university a working-city neighbor. A panorama of the campus would have shown the Main Building with its golden dome, a sight students and local families already regarded as the school's emblem.
