Indiana University in Bloomington was a small state institution in 1909, with a student body in the high hundreds and a campus still built around a handful of limestone and brick halls on a rise above the town. The state had only recently begun to fund the school more steadily, and Bloomington itself was an agricultural and quarrying community, where local limestone was cut and shipped by rail to build buildings across the country. Students in that era were largely drawn from Indiana farm families and small-town high schools, and the university was known statewide for its law and medical training as well as its liberal arts courses. Football and other intercollegiate sports were gaining followings, and campus life revolved around literary societies, chapel, and the seasonal rhythms of the academic year.
