Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana, was a small campus town in 1909, and its founders' anniversary was an occasion for the whole community to gather. The university traced its origins to the Indiana Seminary, chartered in 1820, and by the early twentieth century it had grown under President William Lowe Bryan, who guided its expansion through his long tenure. Bloomington's economy still leaned on local limestone quarries and the railroad lines that carried stone and students into town, and many residents worked in or around the campus. A Founders Day photograph of this kind would have shown students, faculty, and townspeople as a proud record of the school's long lineage, and it would have been treasured locally as a mark of the university's place in state life.
