Indiana University in Bloomington in 1909 was a small state school in a limestone-quarrying town of a few thousand people in south-central Indiana. The university had been reorganized in the 1880s under President David Starr Jordan's successors and by then was growing slowly, with student numbers in the high hundreds and a campus centered on Old Central, the main academic building. Bloomington's economy leaned on quarries cutting Indiana limestone, shipped out by rail, and on farming in the surrounding Monroe County countryside. Students and townspeople alike would have known the campus as the seat of state higher learning, a place where the rail spur and the courthouse square defined daily life as much as the classrooms did.
