Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana, is pictured here in 1909, when this men's liberal arts college, chartered in 1832, was one of the oldest institutions in the state. The town was a small county seat in Montgomery County, and the Monon Railroad ran through it, linking the college town to Chicago and Louisville. Many residents knew Crawfordsville as the home of General Lew Wallace, who wrote much of *Ben-Hur* there and died in 1905, only a few years before this view was taken. The college stood as the town's most prominent institution, and its students and faculty gave Crawfordsville an academic life alongside its farms and local businesses.
