Evansville, Indiana, sat on a broad bend of the Ohio River in 1914, and its waterfront was the working heart of the city. Steamboats, barges, and rafts of logs tied up along the levee, feeding a lumber trade that made Evansville one of the country's major hardwood markets. Factories making furniture, wagons, and tobacco products crowded nearby streets, and railroad lines carried their goods inland. Residents still remembered the flood of March 1913, which had driven water deep into the downtown and prompted a push for better levees and flood protection. The river was both livelihood and threat, and the view of its banks would have looked familiar and important to anyone who worked or lived there.
