Evansville, Indiana, in 1907 was a river city that had passed 50,000 residents by 1900, drawing its growth from wholesale trade and manufacturing along the Ohio. Hardwood lumber moved through its yards and sawmills, and the furniture and wood-products plants that grew from that trade helped make the city known as a center of hardwood manufacturing. Streetcar lines carried workers between the factories, rail yards, and newer residential streets climbing away from the river. Civic debates of the period likely turned on paving, water, and how the town should expand beyond its older core. Residents would have known Evansville as a busy commercial city on the Indiana side of the Ohio.
