Evansville, Indiana, sat on a broad bend of the Ohio River in 1907, and its waterfront was the working center of a city built on river commerce. Hardwood lumber was among the leading trades, with logs and boards moving to furniture and wagon makers, while tobacco warehousing and a growing number of factories added to the local economy. Several railroad lines met in the city, tying its wharves and levee to markets across the Midwest and South. Residents knew Evansville as a river town, where stevedores, deckhands and freight clerks kept goods moving day and night. The river could also turn dangerous, and past floods had repeatedly tested the levee the town depended on.
