Princeton, the county seat of Gibson County in southwestern Indiana, held its fairgrounds in 1907 as one of the main gatherings of the year for farm families across the county. Agriculture drove the local economy, with corn, wheat, and livestock shipped out by rail, while coal mining in the county employed many working men. Fairs of this era combined livestock judging, exhibition halls filled with canned goods and needlework, and harness racing, making them among the few occasions when townspeople and country families met in one place. For residents of a small Indiana town, the fair was the season's chief social event, with grandstands and races drawing crowds from across the county.
