Brockton, Massachusetts, in 1927 was still known across New England as the "Shoe City," since its factories produced a large share of the nation's footwear. The shoe trade drew immigrant workers from Ireland, Italy, and other countries, and the city's neighborhoods grew up around the shops and the rail lines that moved leather and finished goods. The Brockton Fair, held on its grounds each autumn since the late nineteenth century, was the yearly occasion when farm families from surrounding towns and city residents gathered to see livestock, produce, horse racing, and exhibits of local manufacturing. This view of the fairgrounds reflects the blend of agriculture and industry that shaped the city between the wars, just before the Great Depression hit its shoe makers hard.
