Indiana University in Bloomington was still led in 1914 by President William Lowe Bryan, who had held the post since 1902 and guided the school's steady expansion. Most townspeople earned their living from local shops, farms, and the university payroll rather than from heavy industry. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and the United States stayed neutral, so students and residents debated the news in classrooms, boarding houses, and downtown. The campus of this period was still growing its buildings and its reputation beyond Indiana.
