Indiana University in Bloomington was a small, largely residential campus in 1913, and the town around it depended on limestone quarrying, a trade that had made southern Indiana's "stone belt" famous for buildings across the country. The Monon Railroad, which ran through Bloomington, carried both students and stone, tying the college and the quarries to Chicago and Louisville. Samuel Ralston had just taken office as governor that January, and the Progressive-era push for better schools and public services reached the state's campuses. For students and townspeople alike, the university was the center of local life, and the panorama shows a place that still knew itself mainly as a college town set among farms and quarries.
