Lafayette, Indiana, in 1913 was a Wabash River city and the seat of Tippecanoe County, with Purdue University just across the river in West Lafayette. Its economy rested on railroads, the grain and livestock trade, and a range of manufacturing plants serving markets across the Midwest. Golf was spreading quickly through American towns by the 1910s, and a country club like this one became a social center where local merchants, manufacturers, and professional families gathered for matches, dinners, and dances beyond the city streets. The spring floods of 1913 had swept through much of Indiana, a reminder that the river that helped build the town could also threaten it.
