Greencastle, the seat of Putnam County in west-central Indiana, was in 1909 a college town shaped by DePauw University, a Methodist-affiliated school founded in 1837 and renamed for its benefactor Washington C. DePauw in 1884. Students, faculty, and church congregations gave the streets near campus much of their daily character, supporting boarding houses, bookstores, and small shops. Like many county seats in the Midwest, the town also depended on railroads to move farm produce and manufactured goods, and its downtown drew trade from the surrounding countryside. This view shows the campus and town as residents would have known them, with the college and the county courthouse anchoring local identity. Growth in the early twentieth century was steady and modest rather than industrial.
