Trinity College stood on a hill on the west side of Hartford, Connecticut, in 1909. The Episcopal-founded school had been chartered in 1823 as Washington College and took its present name in 1845. Hartford then had roughly 100,000 residents, and much of its wealth came from insurance companies such as the Travelers and the Aetna, along with firearms makers like Colt. Most students were sons of Connecticut families who expected to enter the ministry, law, teaching, or business. The stone halls and open lawns showed a young school still growing, while streetcar lines carried the city's expansion outward.
