Naugatuck, Connecticut, in 1909 was a river town of about several thousand people whose fortunes followed the rubber footwear trade, especially the rubber boots and overshoes that its large factories sent to markets across the country. By then the works were tied to national corporate networks, and the town's wage earners lived in a dense grid of company-era tenements and frame houses close to the mill yards. Ethnic parishes, fraternal lodges, and the saloons and boardinghouses along the main streets gave working families their social center outside the factory gates. A panoramic view of the town in 1909 would have shown residents the mills, church steeples, and the Naugatuck River winding between the hills, all of it familiar as the basis of everyday life.
