In 1909 Hartford was a city of nearly a hundred thousand people, and this panorama shows its downtown as a place of shops, offices, and foot traffic moving between the river and the rail lines that linked the city to New Haven and New York. The surrounding farms of the Connecticut Valley, where farmers raised shade-grown tobacco under cheesecloth, supplied goods that passed through the city's merchants and wholesalers. Hartford's growing population also meant more demand for schools, hospitals, and churches, and the city's leaders were busy expanding its public services. Residents of the period would have known Hartford as the capital of a state whose economy was increasingly built on manufacturing and trade.
