In 1909 Hartford was a river city of nearly a hundred thousand people, and its streets were increasingly crowded with electric trolleys carrying clerks, factory hands, and shoppers between downtown and the outlying neighborhoods. Bushnell Park, laid out in the heart of the city, served as common ground for concerts, Sunday strolls, and holiday gatherings. Trinity College on its hilltop campus and the Wadsworth Atheneum, which had opened its galleries to the public in 1842, gave the city a reputation for learning and culture alongside its commerce. Immigrants from Ireland, Italy, and Eastern Europe filled the tenements near the factories and metal shops, and their children would soon shape the city's schools and parishes.
