In 1902 Hartford, Connecticut, was known across the country as the center of the American insurance business, with companies such as Aetna and Travelers keeping large offices in the city. Manufacturing added to that reputation, especially the Colt's Patent Fire Arms works on the Connecticut River and the Pope bicycle and emerging automobile plants that drew skilled machinists from across New England. The city had grown steadily since the Civil War, and its streets, church spires, and the state capitol built in the 1870s gave it the look of a prosperous, settled New England capital. Many residents still spoke of the literary fame of the Nook Farm neighborhood, where Harriet Beecher Stowe had lived until her death in 1896 and where Mark Twain had built his house in the 1870s.
