New Haven, Connecticut, in 1902 was a manufacturing city of roughly 130,000 people, with factories making carriages, firearms, hardware and clocks, and with the New Haven Railroad running through its yards. Yale College, founded in 1701 and known to New Englanders as the oldest of the state's institutions of higher learning, had by then grown into a university with graduate and professional schools, and its campus on the Green was the city's most visible landmark. Students, faculty and townspeople shared the sidewalks, and the city's identity was tied closely to the university's football games, its societies and its commencement exercises. The buildings pictured here, many of them in the Gothic and Romanesque styles that were fashionable at the time, reflected a school that was expanding its reach well beyond the boundaries of Connecticut.
