In 1913 Waterbury, Connecticut, sat in a narrow valley where the Mad River meets the Naugatuck, and its factories and the hills rising around them shaped nearly every street. Many of its residents were recent arrivals from Italy, Poland, Ireland and other countries, and their churches, social clubs and neighborhood shops formed the everyday fabric of city life. Much of the population walked to work, so the mill districts and residential streets lay close together, and a worker's home was often within sight of the factory gate. For people living there, Waterbury was a place where a family's fortunes depended on the shift schedule posted at the mill.
