In 1913 Bridgeport, Connecticut, was turning some of its attention to the open shoreline along Long Island Sound, where Seaside Park gave working families a place to walk and picnic after factory shifts ended. Streetcar lines linked the park and the nearby Black Rock shore to the mill districts, and summer crowds rode out on weekends. City leaders debated how to add parks and playgrounds as fast as the factories were expanding, a question that many industrial cities of the period faced. Residents knew the city as a place where manufacturing and leisure sat close together along the water.
