In 1913, Seymour was still a mill town on the Naugatuck River in the lower Naugatuck Valley, where brass, copper, and metal goods made in Ansonia, Derby, and Seymour employed much of the working population. Immigrants from Italy, Poland, and Hungary had arrived in growing numbers to fill mill jobs, and their churches, social clubs, and neighborhoods gave the town a more varied character than its New England founders had known. Trolley lines of the Connecticut Company ran through the valley, carrying shoppers, commuters, and workers between the neighboring towns and the larger cities to the south. For residents, the year was a time when the river's water power had given way to steam and electricity, though the mills still set the rhythm of daily life.
