In 1913 Bridgeport, Connecticut, was the largest city in Fairfield County and one of the busiest manufacturing centers in New England, with its population above 100,000 after a decade of rapid growth. Its harbor on Long Island Sound received coal and raw materials, and freight trains moved finished goods from the factory districts to markets in New York and Boston. Many residents were recent arrivals from southern and eastern Europe, and they filled the tenements and boarding houses near the mills, where parish churches and ethnic societies shaped daily life. Local politics in those years centered on how to pay for paved streets, water and sewer lines, and schools for a city that had doubled in size within a generation.
