In 1913, Waterbury, Connecticut, was still a city built around its brass and metal mills, but the year fell just before the European war sent munitions orders flooding into the Naugatuck Valley and pushed the brass industry to its wartime peak. Brass mills, factory yards and rows of worker housing crowded the valley floor, and the streets below the hills carried streetcars and foot traffic between shifts. Residents measured their days by the factory schedules, and many families still had close ties to the old country, which shaped the parishes, lodges and mutual aid societies found throughout the neighborhoods. For most people in 1913, Waterbury meant steady work in the mills, a city whose fortunes rose and fell with the price of copper and the orders that came in from distant buyers.
