In 1909, Wesleyan University occupied a hilltop campus above Middletown, Connecticut, a river city whose economy rested on manufacturing, shipping and rail traffic. The college had been founded by Methodists in 1831 as a men's school, and by the early twentieth century it was known across New England for its liberal arts curriculum and its fraternity and athletic life. Below the hill, factories and workshops lined the Connecticut River and the rail line that carried freight and passengers between New York and Boston. Townspeople and students shared the same streets and shops, so the college and the city were closely tied in daily life.
