New Haven, Connecticut, in 1909 was a manufacturing city of roughly 130,000 people, known for its carriage works, rubber goods, firearms, and clock and hardware makers, with its harbor and rail lines tying it to New York and Boston. Yale University sat at the heart of the city, and its campus around the Old Campus, Berkeley Oval and the Gothic halls on Chapel and College streets shaped daily life downtown. The university had grown steadily through the late nineteenth century, and its students, faculty and alumni were a visible presence in the shops, churches and theaters near the green. Residents of the period would have known the place as both an industrial city and a college town, with the two often living side by side.
