New Haven, Connecticut, in 1909 was a city of roughly 135,000 people, shaped by its manufacturers, its harbor, and the Yale campus that sat at its center. Factories making firearms, carriages, hardware, and clocks lined the rail corridors, and the Winchester and Sargent works were among the names local workers knew well. Yale, then a college of a few thousand students, drew families and visitors to the Old Campus and the newer collegiate Gothic halls, and the university's presence gave the town much of its civic character. Political life centered on the city's Democratic and Republican ward organizations, and the streets were busy with trolleys linking neighborhoods to the green and the railroad station. This panorama captures the campus and city as residents of the period would have recognized them.
