Hartford in 1909 was a manufacturing city as well as an office town, and its machine shops and factories along the Connecticut River ran through the working day. Pratt & Whitney made precision machine tools and measuring gauges that metalworking plants across the country depended on. The Royal Typewriter Company, which had moved its operations to the city in the early 1900s, was building a national market for office machines. The Hartford Courant, founded in 1764, still claimed a place among the oldest newspapers in the United States, and it reported closely on the doings of the state capital, where legislators debated the costs of a growing industrial state.
