Terre Haute in 1913 was a city of about 60,000 people on the Wabash River, and its railroad shops and freight yards still set the rhythm of daily work. The town also drew students to the Indiana State Normal School, which trained teachers for schools across the state, and to Rose Polytechnic Institute, a private engineering college. Eugene V. Debs, who had lived and worked there in his youth, ran for president that year as the Socialist candidate, and his campaign made Terre Haute a place where national political arguments were heard close to home. Residents were proud of their commerce and schools, and they watched the state's rapidly growing industrial towns with a mix of pride and rivalry.
