In 1913 Terre Haute, the seat of Vigo County on the east bank of the Wabash River, was a city shaped by coal, railroads, and manufacturing. Several rail lines met there, and the surrounding coal fields shipped much of their output out by train, while factories along the river employed a large working population. The city was also known for its political life, since Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist leader, lived there and was a familiar presence in local debates. Rose Polytechnic Institute, an engineering college founded in 1874, and the Indiana State Normal School gave the town an academic reputation beyond its industry. The view shows the downtown and the factory districts as residents would have known them.
