Terre Haute, on the Wabash River in western Indiana, was a busy city of rail lines, coal mining, and manufacturing in 1913. Several railroads met in the city, and its shipping of coal from the surrounding Vigo County mines kept its yards and factories running. The city also had a lively civic life, with Rose Polytechnic Institute and the Indiana State Normal School drawing students and teachers. Eugene V. Debs, the Socialist leader who lived in Terre Haute, was a well-known local figure whose political campaigns drew national attention. Residents of the period would have recognized the view as a working river town that depended on the railroad, the mines, and its schools.
