The St. Vrain Glacier sits high on the eastern flank of Longs Peak in the Front Range of Boulder County, Colorado, and this 1920 panoramic photograph records it in the years just after Congress created Rocky Mountain National Park in 1915. By 1920 the valley towns of Estes Park and Longmont depended on summer visitors, guest ranches, and the trade that came with the new park, while nearby ranching and small-scale mining had long shaped the local economy. Conservationists such as Enos Mills, the Estes Park writer and guide who championed the park's creation, were promoting the high country as a place for scenery and recreation rather than extraction. Mountain glaciers like this one were small remnant ice fields, and for visitors who hiked or rode up the valleys, they were among the region's best-known natural attractions.
