Craig, Colorado, in 1920 was a young ranching town in the Yampa Valley of Moffat County, which had been carved out of Routt County in 1911 with Craig as its seat. Cattle and sheep raising along the Yampa River and coal mining in the surrounding hills supplied most of the local work, and the town's merchants depended on those trades. The Denver and Salt Lake Railway, known locally as the Moffat Road, had reached the valley only a few years earlier, giving area shippers a link to Denver and wider markets, though the region remained remote by Colorado standards. Residents would have known Craig as a shipping point at the edge of sparsely settled country, where the courthouse and main street anchored civic life.
