Colorado Springs in 1920 was a city of about 30,000 people, built on the tourism and health trade that had grown up around the Pikes Peak region since the 1870s. Many visitors came for the dry mountain air, and the city also drew wealthy families, retirees, and patients seeking relief from tuberculosis. Gold from the Cripple Creek district, about 35 miles to the west, had helped fill the city's banks and hotels in the 1890s, and by 1920 the local economy leaned more on resorts, schools, and summer travelers. Colorado College, the private liberal arts school founded in 1874, shaped the town's civic and cultural life. This photograph records a 1920 conference held in the city, one of the many meetings that brought professional and civic groups to a community that prided itself on hosting visitors.
