In 1913, Colorado Springs was a city of roughly 30,000 residents that still ran much of its daily life through the streetcar lines that connected downtown with Colorado College, the Manitou Springs road, and the neighborhoods rising along the foothills. Colorado had granted women the vote in 1893, and local women were active in civic clubs, school boards, and charity work that shaped the city's parks and libraries. Farther south, the coalfields were tensing toward the strike that would erupt in September 1913 and grow into one of the bitterest labor conflicts in the state's history. Local people would have measured the year by the steady flow of tourists to Pikes Peak and by the news of unrest in the mining camps to the south.
