Hot Sulphur Springs, the seat of Grand County, sat in the Middle Park valley of north-central Colorado in 1910, where the Colorado River runs past the mineral springs that gave the town its name. Its economy rested on the bathing trade, on cattle and hay raised on the surrounding ranges, and on visitors who arrived by stagecoach and, once the Denver and Salt Lake line reached the valley in the early 1900s, by train. As the county seat, the town drew ranchers from across the valley to its county offices, stores and hotels. Most people then knew it as a health resort, where bathhouses and hotel verandas offered soaks in waters believed to ease rheumatism and other complaints.
