Hot Springs, Arkansas, in 1910 still lived largely off its visitors, but by then many of them came for the races as well as the waters. Oaklawn Park, which began its racing meet on the edge of town in 1904, drew crowds each winter and spring, and the betting that followed gave the resort a reputation well beyond Arkansas. Gambling houses and card rooms operated openly in the commercial district, and reform-minded critics in the state complained about them loudly. Hotels and boarding houses still filled with guests seeking cures, and residents knew their town as a place where pleasure and the bathing trade were closely bound together.
