Eureka Springs, Arkansas, in 1914 was a resort town built into the steep hills of the Ozarks in Carroll County, where its reputation rested on mineral springs that drew visitors seeking relief from illness. The arrival of the railroad in 1883 turned a rough settlement into a destination, and by the early twentieth century tourism, bathhouses, boarding houses, and hotels formed the core of the local economy. Streets climbed the slopes by stone stairways and switchbacks, with houses and commercial buildings packed closely together, which gave the town its crowded, vertical look. Residents knew it as a place of healing waters and summer crowds, and they also lived in a community of churches and civic groups that shaped everyday life.
