Fort Smith in 1912 was a river city of brick commercial blocks and frame houses rising from the Arkansas River bottoms, and it drew much of its business from the coal mines of nearby Sebastian County. Coal from the western Arkansas fields moved out by rail, giving local merchants, freight handlers, and mine suppliers steady work. That fall, the country was choosing a president, and Arkansas voters, who had long leaned Democratic, were heading toward a November result that would send Woodrow Wilson to the White House. Civic life still centered on the churches, fraternal lodges, and the courthouse square where county business was done. For people living there, the town was a working river and rail center whose streets and shops ran on mining and trade.
